The X-Files began with Fox William Mulder, a rookie FBI agent driven by a personal quest to find his sister, Samantha, who he believed was abducted by extraterrestrials when they were both children. Shortly after he joined the FBI, Mulder opened the x-files --cases dealing with paranormal, supernatural, or unexplained phenomena -- in the hopes of gaining leads on alien abductions so that he could learn the truth of what happened to Samantha. Early on, Mulder was paired with Dana Scully, a medical doctor with a strong scientific background. Scully was assigned to the x-files as Mulder`s partner -- a decision made by high-ranking FBI agents who were part of a conspiracy that Mulder was getting close to -- so that she could effectively debunk his work and close the x-files doing the conspiracy`s work for them. However, Mulder and Scully quickly became friends, and they would work together to solve the cases, respecting and learning from one another. Over the years, Mulder`s involvement in the x-files became intensely personal. Scully herself was apparently abducted by aliens and then returned, and Mulder later learned that the government that he worked for may have had a part in that abduction -- they were, in fact, in co-operation with an extraterrestrial race that was threatening to colonize our planet. When Mulder`s father was murdered, the blood ties were strengthened... Mulder learned that not only was his father a part of the same conspiracy that orchestrated Scully`s abduction, but Mulder`s father was also involved in the abduction of Samantha, sacrificing her to the alien colonists instead of Mulder himself. Mulder is impulsive but also very intuitive. He asks the questions that others are either afraid to ask, or simply too ignorant to ask. It is this impulsiveness that has seen Mulder place his life on the line numerous times – both for his all-consuming quest to find the truth at the heart of a global conspiracy, and also to save the life of his partner time and time again. During an investigation in Tunguska, Mulder was infected with an extraterrestrial virus... the very same virus that was to be the colonizing force of the alien invaders. This virus was cured, but instead of vanishing from his system, it laid dormant within Mulder until it was re-activated by residual cosmic radiation found on the rubbing of an alien artifact that was part of an ancient UFO buried beneath the ground. The re-activation of this virus bestowed Mulder with both human qualities and extraterrestrial qualities, making him the very thing that the conspiracy had sought to create -- the perfect alien/human hybrid, or at least an equivalent. Of his extraterrestrial qualities, Mulder gained the abilityto read human minds, but the genetic material that enabled Mulder to have this ability was removed by the Cigarette Smoking Man -- Mulder`s true father and arch-nemesis -- so that he could have the same telepathic powers. The operation did not work; it resulted in the subsequent death of the Cigarette Smoking Man, but Mulder was apparently cured of an ability that caused a tremendous strain on his mind. In fact, he was not cured of this ability -- it once again laid dormant within his system. It was this ability, this power to see and hear things that others can not, that allowed him to see his sister again. Mulder finally discovered the truth about Samantha: that she was dead, and although it wanever directly stated, what is implied is that Mulder`s extraordinary abilities allowed him to communicate with the spirit world and see Samantha one last time befor he could finally accept the truth, and put his quest to an end. This ability, this residual alien genetic material, may have been what allowed Mulder and Scully to finally conceive a child. They had tried to do so some years before, through artificial insemination, but it did not work. Only after Mulder had been through the ordeal with the alien virus was he finally able to conceive a child with Scully. Mulder and Scully apparently slept together, but despite this act of passion and of trust, Mulder still kept his secrets from his partner and lover. What Mulder kept concealed from Scully was the fact that the alien virus within him -- and the abnormal brain activity that he experienced -- was killing him. Though he sought out various cures, the only one that he found was in the most unlikely of places: aboard an extraterrestrial spacecraft. Mulder was abducted himself, and was missing for a period of approximately three months during which Scully was assigned to a new parter, John Doggett. Mulder was returned to Scully, but during his abduction he was mutilated and his condition was too traumatic for him to survive. He died, and he was buried... but three months later, just as Scully was preparing to go onmaternity leave, evidence arose to suggest that there was hope of saving him; his body was being kept alive by the alien virus within him as it was slowly turning him into an extraterrestrial. But Mulder was saved when the life support was pulled and the virus destroyed. Mulder was cured of all illnesses. After the x-files were taken out of his hands and permanently assigned to John Doggett, Mulder quit the FBI and acted briefly as an outside consultant before trying to save Scully`s baby from forces who believed that it would bring about the end of the alien colonization (since it was a product of the genetic material of Mulder, an alien/human hybrid equivalent). The child, however, turned out to be completely normal... and although the father of the baby was never revealed, it was clear that both Mulder and Scully believed that Mulder was the father. After resigning from the FBI, Mulder settled down with Scully and with his son, William, leaving the future of the x-files and the future of mankind -- under the threat of alien colonization -- in as much uncertainty as ever. |
